Stop the Spread, Not the Fire: A Smarter Approach to EV Battery Safety

Lithium-ion battery fires are terrifying. Once thermal runaway begins, the fire is nearly impossible to extinguish. In seconds, an entire vehicle can be engulfed.

So instead of asking, "How do we put it out?" — we should ask a better question: "How do we stop it from spreading?"

That's where fire containment blankets come in. These blankets don't extinguish the fire. They contain it. They isolate the burning battery and prevent the flames from reaching the rest of the vehicle or nearby property.

At the heart of these blankets is a remarkable material: high-silica fabric. Made by companies like Suntex, this fabric contains up to 96% silicon dioxide (SiO₂). It has a softening point of nearly 1,700°C, can be used long-term at 1,000°C, and withstands short-term exposure up to 1,200°C.

High-silica fabric is strong, flexible, non-flammable, and acid-resistant. It's already trusted in aerospace, metallurgy, chemical engineering, and firefighting. Now, it's finding a new purpose — protecting electric vehicles and the people around them.

We can't always prevent a battery from failing. But with the right materials, we can control the damage.

Sometimes, the best way to fight fire isn't to put it out — it's to build a wall it can't cross.
